Configure Unattended MAM Launchpads

Mobile Access Management Launchpad systems must be set up for unattended use.

An unattended Launchpad operates continuously without a specific user logged into the host operating systems.

The Launchpad application manages Smart Hubs that are physically connected to the workstation, enabling device Check In and Check Out workflows.

BEST PRACTICE:

Imprivata recommends a headless system, with no display, mouse or keyboard.

Before You Begin

Confirm that your Mac and Windows computers meet all of the hardware, software, and networking requirements for Launchpads.

  • The computer should be dedicated for Mobile Access Management, and not shared with other apps.

  • Some method of VNC or other remote access is required to all stations.

  • Enable Launchpad Monitoring.  For more information, see Launchpad Monitoring.

Mac Launchpads

  1. Go to System Settings > User & Groups.

  2. Set Automatically log in as to the desired log in account.

  1. Go to System Settings > Lock Screen.

  2. Set Start Screen Saver when inactive to Never.

  3. Set Turn display off when inactive to Never.

  4. Set Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off to Never.

  1. Go to System Settings > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Click the information (i) icon to access the settings dialog.

  2. For Check for Updates, switch the toggle to ON.

  3. For Download new updates when available, switch the toggle to OFF.

  4. For Install macOS updates, switch the toggle to OFF.

  5. For Install applications from the App Store, switch the toggle to OFF.

  6. For Install Security Responses and system files, you can switch the toggle to ON.

Install the Launchpad app in the Applications folder.

  • If the local user is an Administrator, install the app in /Applications.

  • If the local user is a Standard User, install the app in ~/Applications.”

  • Add Launchpad application to Login Items so it launches automatically: 

  1. Go to System Settings > General > Login Items.

  2. Under Open at Login, click the + and browse to and select GroundControl Launchpad, and click Open to add the application to the list.

  1. Go to System Settings > General Sharing.

  2. Under the Content & Media section, set the Content Caching toggle to ON.

Windows Launchpads

  • Mobile Access Management runs as a foreground service, so the computer must automatically log in as a user.

  • The login user should not have admin privileges.

  • Set the Launchpad application to run at start.

Set the computer to automatically boot in case of an unexpected shutdown. On Windows, this is turned on by default.

To verify the setting:

  1. Go to Settings > System > About. Click Advanced system settings under Related links.

  2. Click on Settings under the Startup and Recovery section in the System Properties dialog.

    Confirm under the System failure section that Automatically restart is selected.

The computer must be set to never go to sleep.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Power. Expand the Screen and Sleep section.

  2. Set When plugged in, turn off after to Never.

  3. Set When plugged in, PC goes to sleep after to Never.

Applies to Windows 11 Launchpads with Honeywell CT37, Zebra TC58e devices in use.

Windows includes power-management functionality that can turn off or suspend USB devices to conserve power.

On a Windows Launchpad workstation, this behavior can interrupt USB communication and result in intermittent connectivity issues with the Smart Hub or connected mobile devices.

To maintain reliable connectivity, turn off the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power setting for every USB Hub listed in Windows Device Manager.

  1. Go to Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section.

  2. Locate each entry whose name includes 'USB Hub', such as:

    • USB Root Hub

    • USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)

    • Generic USB Hub

  3. Right-click the USB Hub item and select Properties.

  4. On the Power Management tab, clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power checkbox and click OK.

  5. Repeat for every USB Hub listed.

    IMPORTANT:

    Turning off the setting for only one USB Hub is not sufficient.

    Verify the setting individually for every USB Hub listed in the Device Manager tree.

  6. After updating all of the USB Hubs, validate the configuration:

    1. Confirm that Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is cleared for every USB Hub.

    2. Confirm that the Smart Hub remains connected to the Launchpad.

    3. Confirm that connected mobile devices are detected and remain available in MAM.

    4. If connectivity problems continue, restart the Windows Launchpad workstation and validate the USB Hub settings again.

Windows and Driver Updates

Windows updates or device driver updates may change or reset reset USB Hub power management settings.

If Smart Hub or mobile device connectivity becomes intermittent or unreliable after a Windows or driver update:

  1. Repeat steps 1 through 5 of the procedure above to review and correct any USB Hub where the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power setting has been re-enabled.

  2. Validate Smart Hub and mobile device connectivity.

Include this validation in your post-update testing for Windows Launchpad workstations.
